Sky’s Health Update 3

Sky’s Health Update 3

Amanda Shenk

Ok, so we left off with the fact we were going to start controlled introductions with her allergies. Sadly you this isn’t going to be a fun update. Her doctor thought that she would be able to process roasted peanuts so that is what we tried this round.

We started the visit off with this not being our doctor. We were put onto a different doctors rotation because she had openings sooner than what our doctor had. Next time, I will stick with our doctor and go from there. This new doctor came in with such pep. Sky seemed a little held back with her but at the same time, its a scary time because she is trying new foods. So the doctor explains what she is looking for for a reaction. The standard like swollen, tingly, pain, redness, itchy, hard to breathe, vomiting, upset stomach, dizziness, etc. She stated this a lot. Sky said ok, no problem.

Well they start with a lip rub with the peanut. We wait for 15 minutes. Sky said she’s fine and they go to Sky eating some peanuts. Well they come back after that 15 minute moment and Sky said she was feeling a little pain in her lip. The doctor comes in and says “when did that start?” Sky said “around the time we did the lip rub.”

This is where things go south. For some reason the doctor decided to use her sweet voice and ridicule Sky for not telling her what’s going on. Then the doctor looks to me like I am going to back her up. To which, I just smirk at the doctor and said “she’s been afraid for over half of her life when it comes to peanuts and you’re now having her touch and eat them. She is going to freak out a bit with this. So she is concerned that she can’t tell a difference between freaking out and pain. But she can tell now that it is pain.” The doctor instantly knew that I was not about to be rude to my kid at all. The doctor said she would be right back and leaves.

I turn to Sky and she’s tearing up. At this point I say to Sky “ We are done. You will not be continuing this test. I don’t care if you’re freaking out or having an actual reaction. Right now it’s time to get you safe and calm you down. We’ve lived this long without eating peanuts and you will be just fine without them for a bit longer. But you freaking out and being scared can do more damage than what a positive peanut reaction will do.” At this point the doctor walks in as I am finishing talking to Sky and she hears everything I have to say.  I said “As your mom, I’m saying we are done with this test. I will not put you through any more. Your body is telling us its not ready, either because you are feeling nervous, or because you’re reacting. But right now, we are done. We are going to be happy for the try but I want Skylar around more than I want peanuts. Let’s be done.” The doctor then says “I am ending this control introduction.” My mind went “I finished it the moment my child said she felt something but it was solidified when you tried to scare my kid further.”

You could literally see the shift in Sky’s attitude towards the doctor from that point on. We had to stay for another 1 &1/2 hrs to have Benadryl and make sure Sky was fine. But every time the doctor checked in, Sky barely gave her the time of day. Now if you sit back and think “how dare you let your kid treat someone like that?” Let me say, my kid will act however she wants especially when she was being mistreated. If she doesn’t want to talk to them, I will gladly step in. My kid handled that better than I wanted to, so please do understand my kid being quiet and barely answering the doctor was the absolute right call. So that’s what she did. Then we left and I said “I will not be signing you up for the doctors ever again. We will stick with yours if we do anymore controlled introductions. You could see the relief she felt.

So sadly at this time, Sky can be around the peanut products but she can not eat any. Well that goes for all of her allergies. She can be around them but she can not eat them.
