Good morning fam.
If you have been on our social media at all you will know that Jeremy and I have picked up a new project. Let me be completely real, this was a whim comment made and then the next thing I know, Jeremy is finding a deal and we are picking up the latest project. I forget where I was but I had the kids and then we came home and Jeremy had the project in the driveway. What a wonderful surprise.
Jeremy and I are now in the process of rebuilding a 1986 Honda Accord LX-L. Jeremy found this for such an amazing deal but we had to haul it home as it has a lot going wrong with it. The first and my absolute favorite struggle is the clutch. This gentleman had a cord attached to the clutch and the blinker. So when he pushed the clutch in he had a way to pull it back out. As in the clutch just stayed in place and didn’t move. Innovative!
So this past weekend we started working on the car and let me start with a reminder. This is 4o years worth of build up. I don’t think it was driven recently (I know it hasn’t been.) and when trying to get any bolts off, it took absolutely everything in both Jeremy and I. There was some spots that we acutally even just skipped them and said “we will get a new part.” That has honestly been the mentality in a lot of this project. The back up plan so we don’t have to take it too easy on the car.
To start this entire project, we decided to replace the clutch. Obviously if we replace that, then we can actually drive the car. Actually driving the car helps us find out whatever else we need to work on with this project. Ok, so like good mentality, right? Right! That’s when we also found out we need to replace the cv axles, wheel stud that broke, tie rod ends, upper control arms with ball joints, lower ball joints and the clutch cable. Yea thats the list to just get everything so we can drive it again. Oh and my absolute favorite part, Jeremy drained the transmission oil so we could replace the clutch, yea, that thing only had about 1/4 cup of oil in it. (yes that was the baker in me coming out in measurements) Jeremy just turns to me and goes “uhhhh yea, I think that explains a few issues too.” Then we both started laughing.
With one replacement we ended up with multiple more added to the list. But that is exactly what we were planning. The point of this is for Jeremy and I to have a little joy and spending time together. So there may be times when he takes over and I just sit outside with him but this time we both shared in the work. When we were trying to take the old clutch off, I was the lucky one to go under the car. I ended up doing pull ups while trying with all of my strength to get those dang bolts to budge. It ended up being maybe a minute spent on each but it was full of all my strength and feeling my body come off the ground. At one point only my feet were on the ground. I was very impressed.
Another funny is when Jeremy tried to tell me to undo a pin. I was like “ok, I got this!” Went with confidence to my side of the car to get this pin out. Then I finally said “so this pin you say…. what does it look like?” Cause I was searching and searching but nothing was appearing like he showed me. Thats when Jeremy comes over and goes “Uhhh, ok, maybe you don’t have one…” It wasn’t there. Not sure where it went but it was not where it was supposed to be.
I would say that so far this car project has provided us with a ton of laughs and a longer list of parts that need to be replaced. Now I have absolutely no problem being honest and saying, Im just booping along with the ride and having Jeremy tell me where we go next with the fixing side. I’m just here for the fun! So far so good. Now to see how long we take to get this thing finished!!
